Those who Leave and Those who Stay by Elena Ferrante

Set in Italy, Ms. Ferrante tells the story of life long friends Lila and Elena. Both women are born and raised in a bad neighborhood of Naples and each in their different way fight to become other than where they were born.  As they grow their relationship changes and their story weaves in and out of the social issues of classicism, women’s rights, worker rights, family, and gangs. Long read but well worth the effort.

From the bestselling author of The Jane Austen Book Club, this is the story of an American family, ordinary in every way but one–their close family relative was a chimpanzee.
