Just read an article in the Denver Post that began by saying “Coloradans watch movies, visit art galleries, see plays and read books more than almost any other state in the U.S., according to a wide-ranging study released from the National Endowment for the Arts.”
This study noted that Coloradoans are third in reading literature with 59% of our population.
So, in the interest of reading more and keeping up our percentage…I recently read four books which were all published this year and are excellent reading for boys. I cover the first book here; stay tuned for more “boy book” reports.
The Most Important Thing: Stories about Sons, Fathers and Grandfathers, by Avi. This book’s title page starts out by asking “What’s the most important thing you can do for your son?”
Though this question is never directly answered, the reader explores the lives of seven boys, through seven stories, as they experience loss and redemption, competition, courage, patience, coming of age, resilience and love.
This book is for mature, thoughtful boys around the age of 12 – give or take a couple of years, depending on your boy’s maturity and ability to think out the message of each of these stories. All are well written and interesting, and the whole book is a quick read.
