“After you finish your homework!” is a familiar refrain heard in homes everywhere, now that school is back in session. Yes, homework is important, and yes, it can be challenging, but how to get it done with a minimum of fuss and frustration? Perhaps you are ready for our free, bilingual, drop-in homework help at the Homework Center. This school year marks the twentieth year that Lafayette Public Library has offered free, drop-in homework help for students in grades 3-12!
Homework Center hours
Monday-Thursday, 2:45-6:30 pm; (7 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays) when Boulder Valley School District is in session.
The Lafayette Public Library Homework Center was born out of the desire to provide high quality after-school tutoring for students in the community. Since 1999, the Homework Center has provided a welcoming environment where students can get the help they need with their assignments and projects.
Gaea Shaw
Gaea was the leader, spirit and soul of the Homework Center for 13 years, from 2000-2013. Her skill and passion marked her years as coordinator, and her guidance and commitment made an enormous impact on the lives of many children, adults, and families. And so, following her passing the Library Board rededicated the Homework Center in honor of Gaea Shaw in 2014; you can read about her in this tribute.
What we’ve done
The Homework Center at the Library has guided many kids and teens throughout their school career; some return as tutors and some, like Kevin, go on to pursue higher education degrees. Kevin started at the homework center in third grade, and we have watched his progress as he finished his high school diploma, obtained his college degree, and is now pursuing his PhD in Biology.
Our volunteer tutors
Approximately 35 volunteer tutors, many with 10+ years of experience, volunteer their time each week staffing the center. They offer individualized attention, make computers available for homework use, and create a positive, supportive place to work. Tutors are special people who set the tone of the center, who inspire kids, and who help them find their own footing in their schoolwork.
Our congratulations to Christina, a six-year volunteer, who is off to Brazil to continue her graduate work in applied mathematics, compliments of a Fulbright scholarship.
