Day of the Child/Día del Niño

Twenty-four years ago author Pat Mora founded Children’s Day/Book Day, more commonly referred to as Día. Here at Lafayette Public Library we were inspired by this and wanted to participate in the celebration, Day of the Child/Día del Niño. Over the next week local community organizations will share their favorite books, whether it is a picture, youth or just any favorite book or ebook and what it means to them.

Pat Mora once wrote,

The celebration [Día] emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Día is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages and cultures. The common goals of all Día programming are to:

  • Celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories and libraries.
  • Nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child’s home language and culture.
  • Introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies.
  • Recognize and respect culture, heritage and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities.

Even though we can’t come together to celebrate, join us to hear about local organizations in Lafayette and the resources they have to share with families. Check out an ebook or a digital magazine, and explore our other online resources.

Keep checking our Facebook page to hear authors read from one of their books. We are also honored to have Grupo Folklórico México Lindo share a video of a past performance since they will be unable to dance for us in person. We look forward to having them dance in the near future. If you have a story, poem, dance or book you would like to share, contact Angelique.

Lafayette Public Library is here for you and your family.
