Kid’s Corner: Shadow Puppet Theater

Hi kids, welcome back to another week of Kid’s Corner! This week we are going to build our very own little Shadow Puppet Theater. Look around your house and see if you can find the following supplies:

  • Small box
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Flashlight
  • White tissue paper or even a paper towel works
  • Sticks or popsicle sticks for puppets
  • Paper to draw characters or use toys such as dinosaurs, dolls or action figures
  • Playdough or Styrofoam to hold puppets in place

First, cut out the bottom of your box (if you need help, ask an adult), and tape two pieces of white tissue paper, or one paper towel, on the bottom of the box.

Next, think about what kind of story you want to tell; it could be your favorite fairy tale or story you have heard from your family or from a book. You can even be the author of your own story and make up your own characters. Draw or even trace characters onto a piece of paper and cut them out. If you prefer, you can use your dolls or action figures to tell a story…use your imagination. Using recycled Popsicle sticks or sticks you find outside, tape the characters to the sticks. The bottom of the box with the tissue faces the audience and the flashlight will shine through on the opposite side.

I decided to do a dinosaur storytime with just sound effects.

Check out my video, and the pictures of the fun I had creating my shadow puppet theater for you all.

Once you are ready, gather your family around, make some popcorn, turn off the lights and lights, puppets, action!
