Reading list: Representation in YA fantasy and science fiction

I love to read youth fantasy and science fiction, and have a vast number of fictional friends living in my favorite books. Sometimes it can start to feel like there are only a few storylines, mostly centered in European folk tales, that get reframed over and over in the fantasy genre. However, options are expanding as publishers slowly showcase more representation. If you’re looking to branch out, meet some new characters and experience the world from another perspective, you might consider the following titles:

A Song Below Water” by Bethany C. Morrow
Of Fire and Stars” by Audrey Coulthurst

Akata Witch” by Nnedi Okorafor
Beasts Made of Night” by Tochi Onyebuchi

“The Tiger at Midnight” by Swati Teerdhala
The Storm Runner” by J.C. Cervantes

We Hunt the Flame” by Hafsah Faizal
“Rebelwing” by Andrea Tang

Labyrinth Lost” by Zoraida Cordova
“An Ember in the Ashes” by Sabaa Tahir

“We Set the Dark on Fire” by Tehlor Kay Mejia
“Mask of Shadows” by Linsey Miller
